Interactive Project Brief Semester 1

•FVIA Year 2 – Notes on the briefs

•Interactive Project Brief Semester 1

•Working with a specific brief, you have the opportunity to develop work that has a particular focus on audience interaction.
•You will learn specialist skills to help you achieve this.
•Over 12 weeks we will first look at conceptual approaches to interactivity and then look at how to realise these technically

•You will produce work in one of these three broad areas:
•1. An interactive narrative work – for example an interactive story with various possible twists and outcomes.
•2. An interactive documentary work – for example a non-linear portrayal of a person, event or subject.
•3. An interactive educational work – for example a tool for presenting a range of materials with the purpose of expanding knowledge and understanding of a subject.

•Which ever you decide on, there are some specific things that you need to build into the design of the work:
•Concept: We would rather you did something simple well than something complex badly. Think about why you are offering choices to a user.
•Production: You have already discovered that simply to convey a story audiovisually is difficult. Interactivity adds another layer of consideration for you as a maker. Careful planning and development is key to this project
•Interaction: There must be points of choice and interaction for the user.
•Interactive Brief
•Which ever you decide on, there are some specific things that you need to build into the design of the work:
•Coherence: You must think how the visual, the aural and the interactive work together.
•Technical: We will be looking for technical ability, use of sound, usability, presentation and cohesion in the idea and form that the idea is delivered. Make sure that it works technically - Try out your work on different platforms for robustness and to eliminate glitches.
•Audience: Allow time to try out your piece on different people to test out and revise your interaction design. Audience is important.
•Interactive Brief
•Requirements
•You must attend all the workshops to acquire the background knowledge and technical skills.
•Failure to attend will result in failure of the module.
• Different tasks will be set so you can evidence your learning in: DVD Studio Pro and Final Cut Pro and another media on negotiation with your tutor.
•Interactive Brief
•Requirements
•Your concept must be clearly conveyed.
•All work should be submitted professionally on a labelled (printed) DVD in a hard case (or on a web or mobile based format on negotiation with your tutor). Failure to do so will result in us not assessing the work.
•The project is due to be delivered on 13th January 2011
•Looking at work
•For the next three weeks we are going to be showing you a range of work from the internet to locative work, from interactive DVDs to games, from books to non-linear story structures in film.
•Although you are working with interactive DVD for this project, you will learn about structuring your materials from other forms.

Reflective Essay

Actor/ Producer/ Writer and Director of Sokolov.

For this project after reading the brief I have decided to produce an interactive narrative film. The genre I went for is war. In the beginning I wrote the script for Sokolov. The story opens with a conversation between the commander and Jake Fisherman discussing about Nikolai Sokolov. The story takes place during the beginning of the Cold War. Sokolov is a German rocket scientist, a family man but because of his great knowledge of rocket ships he was forced to work for the 3rd Reich during Hitler’s New Order. While his family was held captured in case he tyres to flee, after the great fall of the Nazi empire Sokolov was tracked down by the Russian Agents and was used to create the first rocket to orbit the earth which the Soviets eventually achieved. Shortly afterwards the Americans found out the success of the rocket and got their spies to infiltrate Sokolov and sneaked him out of Russia. But soon their found out and had the idea of buying missiles form Chain and conducting it in Cuba. The Americans did not feel comfortable with his idea of a missile pointing straight at them and announced a Code Red. Soon both powerful nations came to a conclusion in which the Americans return Soklovo back to Russia or if not we will go into a nuclear war and eventually the Americans given into to the idea and returned Sokolov to the Eastern front. But after 9 month Soklovo managed to get in touch with one of the America spies that helped him before and explained to them how the Russians are conducting a new nuclear weapon which he has developed and its all most in completion. The Soviets moved Soklovo in the front borders of Kazakhstan a new nuclear test site was built. Know Jake Fisherman the head of the Americans Arms Force is given this assignment of infiltrating Sokovo in the high ranks mountains in Kazakhstan and to bring him back safely before the nuclear weapon is complete.

During the research time I’ve done an interactive diagram explaining and detailing all the actions and options my character offers, were the viewer he/she can interact with my character by pressing buttons and that every choice you make it comes with a since of responsibility with it. For creating this I used Apple DVD Studio Pro Volume 4 and Apple Final Cut Studio Pro 2010. After the diagram and went ahead in developing the script which included hours of important world history research, which turned out to be great. Along with it I included synopsis and a treatment to help me express my whole story in a nutshell.

During the development research I took the liberty in visiting my location before hand as it was a great idea because it gives a clear over view of how I should shot my script. I also took pitchers around Trent Park forest such as space of direction, exit ways, lakes and also I checked the news wither report during shooting week so I can be more prepare for what it’s to come. But unfortunately the 18th January it was raining heavily that morning so luckily I had produced some rain jackets for and my team and also waterproof kits to protect the camera equipment which I borrowed form the Department Media Workshop. Know as I was in the process of my project next step was to create the storyboard, detailing what happens in every single shots. By doing this it helped me create a batter direction to filming the project.

After visiting the location I went on search for my main actors. But unfortunately the three actors I original hired for this role did not turn up on the day of shooting which was on the 18th, so instead I called up Siam Ahamed from Interactive Arts class and Timeyin Jones from screenwriting class and myself to act in my film and so Siam and Timeyin both agreed to help me shot the film on the day as there were both free on the time. Before shooting my script me and the team had a brief meeting that morning and went through the risk assessment, floor plan of the forest, script, storyboard, treatment, synopsis and equipment handling. The meeting went well and we started shooting on location.

During the first two week into the research I visited Trent Park Middlesex office to get an all location clearance which I had to explain what my story was about, why I liked this location and how useful it is to my project, and what equipments will I be using and finally I was warned because the Forest is open to the public I must not use or express any weapons to the public as it could possible scare them and signed a location clearance form which I downloaded from Oasis plus on Documentary.
After I was done shooting I presented a release form which I created using he Middlesex University- Video/Film/TV production/processes/roles and procedures booklet. I needed this simply to get permission to use their image and audio sound, which was signed and returned to me. I also done a Call sheet to record what’s been happening during the day of the filming, this included title and programme name, date and time of filming, list of crew/actors/s, lunch time breaks and any special requirement. In the day of the shooting I provided so refreshment as I thought it would be a great idea to make them feel comfortable so they can perform well enough for me and it went very well, even though it was wet, could, full of mud and windy it managed to make them feel good and motivated them even batter.

What I could do next is making sure I pick the right actors for the role and making sure there are willing to work hard and help each other. Picking a dryer day for shooting so we can avoid any rain, water damaged equipments but although I was prepared for the season you can never be too sure of what’s going to happen next.

Scrpit: Sokolov

ext.airplane.day scene 1

After the end of World War II the world was split into two—east and west this marked the beginning of the new era called the Cold War.

COMMANDER

I’ve got some important news. The CIA has given us the green light for the mission.

jack

Talk to me.

COMMANDER

About two years ago. A certain Soviet scientist requested asylum in the West through one of our spies. His name is Nikolai Sokolov. The head of the BTC-700 Design Bureau, one of Soviets’ top-secret weapon research facilities.

JACK

Sokolov...isn’t he that famous rocket scientist?

COMMANDER

The very same one. On April 12 1961 the Soviets achieved the first space flight in history. The rocket that carried Yuri Gagarin into orbit was the A1, also known as the Vostok 3KA-3 but Sokolov is said to be the man most responsible for the multi-engine cluster used in that rocket.

JACK

From a loyal technician to head of a Design Bureau, That’s quite an achievement but why’d he want to defect?

COMMANDER

It seems he’d become afraid of his own creation.

JACK

Is that why he left his country and his family behind and went over the fence?

COMMANDER

Not exactly. One of his conditions was that his family was also to be taken safely to the West. We used our spies to get the family out first. And succeeded in sneaking Sokolov over the Berlin Wall. I was the one who conducted the operation.

JACK

Then what?

COMMANDER

We got Sokolov over in one piece but the whole ordeal head lift him exhausted. We checked him into a hospital in west Berlin it took use two weeks and more than 500 miles to get him from the research facility in the Soviet Union to Berlin. He was in no condition to say anything coherent and it was only a week later that we had a much bigger problem.

JACK

The Cuban Missile Crisis.

COMMANDER

Indeed. On October 16th 1962 President Kennedy received word that the Soviets were in the process of deploying intermediate-range ballistic missiles in Cuba. The President demanded that the Soviets dismantle and remove the missiles at the same time, he announced a Blockade to prevent further missile shipments from reaching Cuba, But the Soviets didn’t back down. Instead of placing their armed forces on secondary alert the Soviet transported ships carrying missiles to continue on course towards Cuba. The US and Soviet forces went on red alert an all-out nuclear war. Frantic negotiations were conducted through United Nation’s Emergency Security Council to end the standoff. Finally, on October 28th the Soviet Union agreed to remove its missiles from Cuba and so the world avoided a nuclear holocaust. But in order to get the Soviets to pull out the missiles we had to make a deal.

JACK

So what did the Russians really want?

COMMANDER

Sokolov, they wanted us to return Sokolov.

JACK

You mean to say the Soviets pulled out of Cuba just to get their hands on Sokolov?

COMMANDER

That's right.

JACK

What the hell was he working on?

COMMANDER

At that time we had no idea, we were running out of time. It was either give up Sokolov or risks a full-scale nuclear war, but in the end we had no choice. President Kennedy gave into Nikita Khrushchev demands. The next day I got Sokolov out of the hospital and handed him over to the Russian agents on the eastern front. Sokolov kept on screaming ’Save me’ until he disappeared from my sight. Then a month ago, we received some new information from one of our spies.

JACK

About Sokolov?

COMMANDER

Yes. He was taken back to the research facility and forced to continue working on the weapon in question under KGB supervision and what’s more the weapon it’s on the verge of completion.

JACK

What is this weapon?

COMMANDER

Missiles.

JACK

Same technology?

COMMANDER

No. It appears to be a new kind of nuclear missile device. Our satellite showed in the last 9 month the soviets have been conducting frequent nuclear test at Semipalatinsk.

JACK

Something to do with the weapon I assume.

COMMANDER

We are talking about a secret weapon so big that Khrushchev was ready to pull out of Cuba to get it back.

JACK

Is Sokolov still in the facility?

COMMANDER

No. According to our information he’s in Astana.

JACK

Kazakhstan?

COMMANDER

Yes. Apparently they’re conducting a new field test program for the weapon. Jack this mission would never have been possible if he were still in the research facility. This is out best chance to get him back. You need to infiltrate him and mark the drop off point. Time is taking. Do you accept this mission--YES/NO.

Outline of procedure / activity and location:

Me and my team started shooting at 12:00pm, it was running heavily that morning so as a result the forest was very dirty and full of water and mud, which was extremely hard to shot in that condition. The whole scale of the forest had many holes in the ground as it could be highly dangers by breaking their lags. As the forest is open to the public and residents I had to make sure people can’t be in my shots, to do so I stopped shooting/action any time people including families went passed. We also had our Middlesex University ID cards in present just in case someone like any residents asks what we are doing.

Potential hazards in Shooting on area:

Expected Hazards

Damaging camera equipment by dropping in the lake or in the mud full of water

Ground is full of holes as they can be very dangers once you stepped in it which can result in breaking your feet/leg with it.

The forest is full of trees, bushes and Poison ivy but as a result of that my actress were comfortable as I provided a full waterproof suits and boots to keep them warm and dry, so we can county finishing shooting.

People walking pass us, making sure we give clear way for them and not to record with any permission.

Persons potentially at risk:

No one was hurt or had any potential risk during the shooting. Everything was all right.

Action in event of an accident or emergency
Before shooting we received a location clearance from Trent Park offices and it came with, if we have any emergency problems we must notify the security guards at once, which we had their phone numbers and we can all at any time. And also In case of a personal problem
